In the beginning…4. Earth Overlook: Days Two & Three
That
“tomorrow” didn’t come for awhile; though those next three “days” seemed to fly
by for Jesus. He was really doing his homework. To the utter amazement of the
heavenly spectators, God allowed him to take the lead in those creation events.
On the
second day Jesus made the sky of which he had spoken and which he had named in
that earlier conversation with his father. The sky was an apt separator between
the waters below and what amounted to waters above. Those higher waters were
more like a misty area of gases and vapors, but Jesus knew it would all fall
into place later. Along with the sky, he placed an atmosphere that gradually
thinned until it became space, a huge void of dark nothingness. When an angel
asked him about that seemingly useless area, Jesus simply said, “Wait and see.”
As the
light faded as it had the first time, Michael exclaimed, “Guess that’s the end
of Day Two, everyone. See you tomorrow.” And they all departed; their speech
buzzing with the grandeur of it all.
Earth Overlook: Day Three
That
next day, the third of creation, was really exciting. The multitude watched
with amazed rapture as Jesus, after an expectant look up at his father who
nodded approval, spoke some words and immediately the waters bubbled and moved
together. Seemingly with a mind of their own; water rippled and bunched up in
many places making room for land to appear. This was as dry as dirt so that’s
what Jesus called it … dirt.
It took
only a brief time for him to create mountains and valleys with lakes and ponds
placed strategically. All the dry ground seemed alive with flowing creeks, brooks,
and rivers running through it. Numerous streams seemed to come up from the
Earth itself and watered the ground. Amid numerous exclamations of delight from
the mesmerized gallery of onlookers as each new place appeared, Jesus humbly
stated, “You ain’t seen nothing yet.”
“That’s
fine, Son … just fine,” God stated. “What’s next?”
With
that granting of permission to continue, Jesus again eyed the creation,
occasionally pointing to various plots of land. He uttered the simple words,
“Let the land produce vegetation.”
Immediately
the dry ground came alive. All kinds, colors, and sizes of plants, bushes,
grasses, and trees sprang up to form meadows and forests as far as all those
astounded eyes could see. Actually, that wasn’t very far since some of the
angels quickly realized what they hadn’t comprehended before – that the dark
void always had been round…They were staring down at a gigantic sphere. They concluded
that the varied beauty they observed directly beneath them permeated the entire
globe that they now casually referred to as Earth. The sighs and nods of
affirmation were many.
Jesus
stepped back speculatively surveying his handiwork and gladly proclaimed, “Now
that’s what I’m talkin’ about!” Then turning to the crowd he announced, “That’s
a rap. That’s all for today folks; same time tomorrow.”
God looked
over it all and said, “That looks mighty good, Son.”
“Thanks,
Dad. I thought you’d like it,” Jesus grinned ear to ear.
“So,
Son, what’s in store for tomorrow?” God waited patiently.
“It’s a
surprise, and don’t you…” Jesus started playfully to shake his finger at his
father, but was instantly interrupted.
“I know,
Son,” God pledged. “I won’t know what’s up before it happens even though I could.
Besides, I’ve got my own job to do. Now that we have a beautiful and amazing
world down there, I’m going to create an equally beautiful and amazing angel to
be its guardian. Remember we talked about that?”
“I
remember; but why can’t man just take care of it himself?” Jesus wanted to
understand.
“There
are some things I really don’t want you to understand just yet, Jesus,” God
explained. “This is one of those mysteries that you will comprehend in due
time. Okay?”
“Okay,
Dad. I’ll try not to be bothered by any of those thoughts. I’ll just hang onto
the serenity that comes to me when I simply accept the things I cannot change.”
“And
then you gain the courage to affect the things that are under your control;
right?” God questioned.
“Right,
Father; and then I receive wisdom when I ascertain the difference. I get it,”
Jesus resigned himself to the situation.
“But
don’t worry, Son. I’ll be really surprised tomorrow just like everyone else,”
God assured his expectant son.
